The proposed concept involves the development of an artificial intelligence-based application or plug-in designed for integration with existing Ministry of Health (MOH) or health-related applications. This solution aims to generate personalized medication schedules for patients at the time of medication dispensing. The application will provide a comprehensive medication schedule that clearly outlines the timing of doses, along with essential information regarding drug and food contraindications. This feature is intended to enhance medication management, promote drug safety, and improve overall efficiency. Furthermore, the application could incorporate timely reminders to support adherence when integrated into a health management platform.
The proposed application could serve as a valuable PhD project, particularly in the realm of improvement and implementation research. However, I currently lack the necessary skills and knowledge in data analysis, deep machine learning, and programming that are essential for the development and implementation of this idea.
Patients often encounter challenges in adhering to medication schedules, particularly when managing multiple prescriptions, a situation known as polypharmacy, or time sensitive medications like antibiotics or sensitive medications like anticoagulants. In Oman, approximately more than 76% of the elderly registered patients are affected by polypharmacy. Unfortunately, healthcare providers such as physicians and pharmacists may be unable to provide comprehensive guidance during medication dispensing due to time constraints or insufficient knowledge of a patient's complete medication history. For instance, a patient with both diabetes and hypertension may require short-term antibiotic treatment. The question arises: how can they effectively integrate these new, time-sensitive medications into their existing daily regimen? This complexity underscores the need for an innovative solution that can assist patients in managing their medications more effectively and safely. Addressing these issues is crucial for improving medication adherence and overall health outcomes in the Omani population, particularly among those with chronic conditions.
